ETT Tandem Model and Collection of Good Practice now available

Published by:

The European Trainer Teacher Tandem Model has been finalised by the project partners. The praxis guideline for teachers, trainers and institutions of vocational education and training gives advise on how to plan, prepare and implement European Trainer Teacher Tandems. It gives information on the different motives for tandem activities among teachers and trainers of the European Vocational Education institutions and possible learning outcomes.

We would like to encourage other VET institutions in Europe to follow our example and implement tandems themselves. You can download the guideline here.

During the pilot project “European Trainer Teacher Tandem” six transnational meetings have taken place in six different countries five times with simultanous tandem activities. The meetings have taken place at the partner organisations’s places. The places have been very diverse, ranging from vocational schools with only small practical workshops to public-private partnership training centres and work-based learning in companies. The full variety of vocational education and training has been represented in the ETT Tandem project. This variety also had a deep impact on the ETT Tandem Model. It has become obvious that the Model has to be an open, flexible and inspiring one rather than a limiting one. It shoud give hints, advice and ideas, but give enough space to adjust and widen the idea of European Trainer Teacher Tandems depending on the local conditions and environment.

Another product of the ETT Tandem project is the “Collection of Good Practice Examples”. In addition to the general advise and recommendations in the guideline the “Collection of Good Practice Examples” presents the voices of the tandem participants themselves. The broschure gives insight to the practical experiences made by teachers ans trainers throughout the pilot tandems in five of the six partner countries. With descriptions of activities and statements of the participants it underlines the benefit of the exchange of European trainers and teachers in vocational education and training.

Please go ahead and build tandems, we can only recommend!

European trainers and teachers are impressed by mentality of teaching in Kozani, Greece

Published by:

European trainers and teachers have been deeply impressed by OAED EPAS Kozani teachers and their strong effort and commitment to vocational education of their students. The great effort and good will of the teachers to lead their student to a successful vocational education and find jobs is highly appreciated by the partners of the ETT Tandem project. It has been stated that “modern and high level equipment is not the main aspect of learning and teaching in a good way”.

For the 4th time teachers and trainers from the six partner countries of ETT Tandem observed the teaching and training in one of the partner countries. This time OAED EPAS Kozani, a school in the Greek region of Western Macedonia, hosted the European project. What has been most outstanding for the European partners is the close relationship between the teachers of the VET school and their students. As practical training in companies is not regulated by law in Greece, teachers act as mentors and supervisors in all stages of vocational education. The fact that students work at companies in the morning and go to school in the afternoon day by day has astonished the group. Apart from that, technical equipment is far from the standards in the other European partner countries. But students as well as teachers seemed not to complain, but to be really grateful for having the possibility to work and learn/ teach. This mentality of “making the most out of very little” is a good impression the European partners have taken back home and keep in mind for their own teaching.

From their own experiences , the partner teachers and trainers advised their Greek colleagues to leave open the way of solving problems or finding solutions to their students. Instead of showing the way in the beginning and let the students copy it, students should find their own ways of getting to a specifically defined goal.

The development of a model for European Trainer Teacher Tandems is processing. Experiences from the first tandem in Copenhagen have succesfully been transferd into an improved transnational tandem in Austria. The partners of ETT Tandem were hosted by the project team of BFI Upper Austria from February 23rd – 25th 2reflection11016. The tandems shadowed and experienced vocational training at the training center of the company BRP Rotax at Gunskirchen for two days. A mix of observing, talking to vocational training staff and the apprentices themselves has given the foreign teachers and trainers a broad but intensive impression of how the practical units of dual training in Austria function.antonio at rotax

On the last day of the transnational meeting, the project management team asked the trainers and teachers to reflect on their observations, experiences and possibilites of methods transfer into other VET systems with a World Café method. Despite of structural differences in the VET systems of the european partner countries, trainers have pointed out transferable elements and presented themselves keen on taking measures in their own teaching.

Initial European Trainer Teach Tandem in Copenhagen

Vocational Teachers and Trainers from Spain, Greece and Austria made a first ETT Tandem experience in Copenhagen/ Denmark. For 2 days they joined the companies “Fugmann” and “Roder and Mortensen” which are both family-owned companies in the field of electrical installations in Copenhagen. Both companies have a high proportion of apprentices and are committed to promote and facillitate the dual training.

The first tandem experience in the framework of the ETT Tandem project allowed anDSC01260 intensive exchange between trainers and teachers of the dual training system of the respective countries together with company managers, apprentices and staff of educational associations. Specialities and differences of the training systems have been pointed out and have given an impulse for all actors of the project to reflect on familiar approaches and procedures.
